March Highlights: Awakening, Waterways & Honoring Pearl Ellis

Awakening Members Show Comox Valley

Awakening Members Show

Spring is officially here, and warmer weather is just around the corner! Like many of you, I find inspiration in the breathtaking beauty of the Comox Valley and make it a priority to spend time in nature. The gallery is another wonderful source of inspiration, where you can experience the incredible work of our talented members.

On view throughout March is our "Awakening" Members' Show—featuring over 60 pieces that provide insight into the creative process and serve as inspiration. Be sure to visit and cast your vote for your top three favorite pieces!

Next up is our juried concept show, "Ebb and Flow". This exhibition is part of the larger Waterways: The Comox Valley Gallery Hop, where nine galleries across the valley will each present unique water-themed exhibitions. Annual General Meeting – Save the Date!

It’s that time of year again! We invite all members to attend our Annual General Meeting (AGM) on April 26th at 2:00 PM in the Lion’s Den.

The AGM is a great opportunity to show your support, stay informed, and actively participate in shaping the future of the gallery. We will be sharing highlights from the past year, discussing upcoming initiatives, and providing insights into the work being done behind the scenes.

This is also your chance to ask questions, share feedback, and contribute ideas for future endeavors. Your voice and participation are essential in keeping our gallery a thriving and dynamic space for the arts.

We look forward to seeing you there!

You’re Invited!

April 12th would have been Pearl Ellis’s 100th birthday, and to honor her legacy, we are hosting a special birthday reception alongside the Comox Museum and Archives Society. Join us on Saturday, April 12th, to celebrate our founding member and gallery namesake with cake, conversation, and community.

Current and past gallery members, members of Pearl’s family, and officials from the Town of Comox will be in attendance. You’ll also have the opportunity to view a special museum display about Pearl’s life, created in collaboration with our co-residents at the museum. We are delighted to work together in our shared space, generously provided by the Town of Comox.

This event is more than a tribute to one remarkable individual—it’s a celebration of the enduring community spirit that values both history and artistic expression, supported by our members and municipal government.

.Art and history are deeply entwined, shaping our collective identity and preserving the voices of those who came before us. Pearl Ellis’ contributions to the arts remain a vital part of our local heritage, inspiring new generations of creatives.

As our community grows and welcomes newcomers from diverse backgrounds, organizations like ours play a crucial role in bridging past and present. By preserving artistic traditions while embracing new voices, we help ensure that cultural heritage remains a vibrant, evolving part of our community.

More than exhibition spaces, arts organizations foster connection and dialogue, bringing people together across generations and experiences. Whether through exhibitions, workshops, or community events, we create opportunities for engagement, inspiration, and belonging—continuing Pearl Ellis’ legacy and celebrating the power of art to unite and uplift.

We hope to see you there!

Elder College Opportunities

Elder College is an organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for mature learners in our community by offering affordable learning opportunities led by passionate instructors. They are currently looking for instructors from various fields—including the arts—and have asked us to spread the word.

While I understand that artists are frequently asked to share their time and expertise without significant compensation, I also know that some of you may enjoy an opportunity to showcase your artistic journey and process in an educational setting.

Remembering Heather

We are saddened to share the passing of Heather Deane-Clark, a dedicated volunteer and frequent host at the gallery. Heather’s warm smile and friendly nature made every visitor feel welcome, and her presence will be deeply missed. To honour her memory, we have received permission from the Town of Comox to plant a perennial in our front garden—a lasting tribute to her kindness and the joy she brought to our gallery community.

Closing Thoughts

As we step into spring, we hope you take full advantage of all the creative opportunities available—whether by visiting our exhibitions, submitting your own work, attending special events, or getting involved in new learning experiences. The strength of our gallery comes from the passion and participation of our members, and we are grateful for the energy and enthusiasm you bring to our community. Thank you for being a part of the Pearl Ellis Gallery, and we look forward to sharing another inspiring season with you!
